Head to head: four digital audio workstations

Article Abstract:

Digidesign's 7,990 Pro Tools III 3.2 is the market leader among four digital audio workstations reviewed. Pro Tools benefits from excellent third-party support, but file management is a chore with Pro Tools. Sonic Solutions' $6,085 Sonic System is the most flexible system tested. It is capable of recording multiple tracks simultaneously and allows editing to begin while recording is ongoing. Alone among systems tested, Sonic System plays stereo files rather than two separate mono files. It benefits from outstanding signal processing features that facilitate such operations as level-setting when overlaying background music with narration. Both Pro Tools III and Sonic System are based on Apple Macintosh Power Mac NuBus systems. Micro Technology Unlimted's $4,895 MicroSound approaches the same tasks in useful ways, but suffers from its uniqueness in areas such as in indexing and track handling. Spectral's $5,759 Prisma Music has an unusual interface that is not hindered by menus.

Hey big spender

Article Abstract:

Venture capitalists have invested over $3.66 billion in around 699 deals for 1997, just in Silicon Valley. This is an increase over 1996 of nearly 63%, as reported in a San Jose Mercury News/Price Waterhouse Money Tree report. In general, venture capitalists interested in an investment will examine a company to see if its management team has an unusually high level of passion for what they are trying to accomplish. Venture capitalists want to see a legacy of honesty, quality and integrity. They also look for products that meet a particularly pressing need, rather than those that make a customer's work slightly less difficult. Marketing is also important. Companies need to define a proprietary product and show that they can gain and keep an important position in the market with that product.

The next big thing: Internet devices

Article Abstract:

3Com's Palm Computing Division is seeking to expand its commanding lead in the personal digital assistant market with the slated Fall 1999 introduction of its PalmPilot VII. The new PDA will feature a wireless internal modem that will enable Web access as well as providing a platform for e-mail transmissions. Although some concern exists that the projected $800 cost may slow sales momentum, 3Com officials anticipate that a combination of Web-enabled applications for its Palm OS and projected Palm-based applications for digital telephones, such as Qualcomm's pdQ smartphone will attract new customers.
