How to Administer an Employee Suggestion Program

Article Abstract:

Employee suggestion programs are becoming more popular as management is increasingly adopting a participative management style. Motivation is a chief goal of a suggestion program. Support from top-level management is required for an employee suggestion program to succeed. Support is shown by providing an environment conducive to the reception of new ideas, being present to make awards, signing letters adopting or rejecting suggestions, and publicizing the program on a regular basis. It is important that management of the suggestion system is placed in a department that reaches various organizational lines. Eligibility requirements need to be established. Guidelines for evaluating suggestions include determining if the problem discussed exists, and justifies time and implementation costs, if the suggested solution will really solve the problem, who should give the full evaluation, and if special data should be compiled to help reach a decision. Awards are most often cash; most maximum awards from $10,000 to $25,000. A table shows examples of suggestions that have been that been rewarded.
