Developing for DVD

Article Abstract:

Creating a CD-ROM-like title in large-capacity DVD requires only a few DVD-ROM-specific tools. However, creating DVD-Video (DVD-V) discs that play in consumer DVD players or simultaneous DVD-ROM/DVD-V discs requires far more effort. Developers may need to add an MPEG 2 video and Dolby Digital audio encoding system with DVD-V emulation capability. In essence, a DVD-ROM-compatible application must be added to a DVD-V title. High-end DVD-V development systems, which are primarily used by Hollywood studios, can cost $1 million or more. Post-production studios and multimedia developers are willing to pay $25,000 to $200,000 for Daikin Scenarist and other midrange DVD-V systems. The only low-end product currently available is Multimedia Technology Center's DVMotion for Windows, about $10,000. All DVD authoring tools are constantly being revised.
