Living large

Article Abstract:

Eurocom's new 8500 notebook computer offers a 15.1-inch screen, built-in floppy and CD-ROM drives, a 233MHz Pentium MMX processor, a 2.1GB hard drive, a 56Kbps modem and large speakers at a price of $4,925. The machine is powerful enough to replace a desktop but is bulky and heavy at 9.5 pounds. Its keyboard is unusual, with a built-in numerical keypad, two Windows 95 keys and a Macro key. Eurocom had to make serious compromises to fit the keypad in, shrinking the alphanumeric keys and making the arrow keys difficult to use. The Macro key is too easy to press accidentally because it is located next to a tiny Shift key. The machine's extra size and weight justify themselves in the superb display, which is clear and bright as well as large and has almost no glare. Software installs and runs quickly. Battery life is an adequate but not exceptional two hours.
