Matsushita acquires pioneer status in Philippines

Article Abstract:

Matsushita Communication Industrial Corporation of the Philippines (MCP) has been granted a pioneer status by the the Philippines Board of Investment (BOI). The pioneer status grants the company some priveleges, including a 6-year exemption from corporate taxes, exemption from taxes on imported capital goods and parts, as well as reduced taxes on any capital merchandise produced in the Phippines. MCP, which operates a factory in Laguna Technopark in the Philippines, is one of the companies in the Philippines that pioneered the production of a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) digital mobile phone.

Article Abstract:

Exports of Korean-made cellular phone handsets reached $1.557 billion in the 1st half of 1999, up by 144.8% from the year-ago period. Total exports doubled annually to more than $1.4 billion from 1996 to 1998. The country's top CDMA handset makers Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Electronics and LG Information and Communications Ltd account for 56.9% of the global CDMA handset market.
