Need Information? You Name It, Databases Supply It

Article Abstract:

Data bases are electronic retrieval services. They can be categorized in three groups-current information, such as stock quotations; information bases, collections of historical and current data; vertical, specialized services for a particular profession. To use data bases efficiently, choose those with reliable sources, use as few as possible, control access, and consider a research service. For frequent users, a 1200 baud modem costing $600 minimum is cost-effective. A course in the instruction on the use of a data base should be considered. A feasibility study should include determining information needs and budget, making a survey, and getting demonstrations. A chart of six database systems with fees, charges, and features is included.

Article Abstract:

Choosing a minicomputer is an important and complex task. Compounding the selection problem is the fact that the distinction between micro, mini, and mainframe is blurring. A potential buyer should pay attention to the basic configuration, software applications, network possibilities, and distribution channels.
