OA, Networks Play Key Role at NASA

Article Abstract:

The NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, is using office automation and local area networks to speed the flow of information. The expanding space shuttle schedule needs to be updated often and quickly requiring that the system able to integrate text and graphics into documents in a short time. Schedules that manually took up to a month to produce are now produced automatically in two hours. Local area networks connect three NASA directorates. Star information processing systems and personal computers from Xerox linked by Ethernet networks are used.

More Emphasis on Local Networks

Article Abstract:

Local area networks use is on the rise within the United States federal government. Both the Army and the Navy have installed new systems. The Army has installed a broadband network for communications traffic within bases and a second $500,000 network for communications links with bases in and out of the United States. The Navy is linking its supply facilities in California using ring technology.

New Multimedia System Being Developed for Experimental Use by DARPA

Article Abstract:

Diamond, a desktop communications system which combines voice, graphics, images and text, is under development by Bolt, Beranek, & Newman Inc., for DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). Tests on the workstation will be performed by the Army later in the year. At the moment, the system uses BBN's 32-bit Jericho workstation. Sample ouput from the Diamond system is included.
