Article Abstract:

Wedge Technologies' $3,790 ShowBIZ-9000 notebook computer includes a 200MHz Pentium MMX processor, 16MB of RAM expandable to 128MB, a 2.1GB hard drive, a 12.1-inch TFT display, an 11x CD-ROM and a Duracell Smart battery. It is oriented toward on-the-road presentations and can be converted into a projection panel by removing a panel on the back and attaching a cooling fan. The machine has a combination floppy disk and CD-ROM drive set in a smart bay that can also be used for a second battery or other storage device. The Duracell NiMH battery lasts about two hours per charge. Wedge's keyboard is full-sized and well laid out, but feels flimsy and makes noise. Other good features include composite and S-video capture ports and dual Type II PC Card slots. Users can attach the machine to a TV, but text smaller than 20 points is nearly unreadable on a television screen. The large LCD is powered by a NeoMagic graphics controller and supports 800x600 resolution; the ESS audio chip set produces adequate sound quality.

Micro Express NP7200MMX

Article Abstract:

Micro Express' $2,599 NP7200MMX notebook is based on a 200MHz Pentium MMX processor and includes 24MB of standard RAM, expandable to 144MB, a 10x CD-ROM drive, a 1.2GB hard drive, a 33.6-Kbps fax modem and a 12.1-inch active matrix display. The notebook is a bit heavy at 7.9 pounds. The CD-ROM drive can be used simultaneously with the floppy drive, but the drive bay can also contain another hard drive or a magneto-optical drive. The SVGA display provides bright, crisp images. The system includes 2MB of video RAM to aid in displaying graphics and video. The keyboard's keys are small and can cause typing errors, and the touchpad's mouse buttons are difficult to press. Audio performance is passable, but not up to the standards of most portables. The nickel-metal hydride batteries provide about two hours of user per charge.
