Total cost of ownership: tallying up portable purchases

Article Abstract:

Determining and managing total cost of ownership (TCO) for notebook computer purchases is notoriously difficult and becomes more so as the devices grow more powerful and flexible. A notebook may carry multiple megabytes of RAM and gigabytes of disk storage but is not kept stationed near an experienced repair technician, a situation that causes maintenance costs to increase. TCO has become a buzzword because corporations are under pressure to reduce costs in the face of global competition. Increased reliance on computers for daily work and the spread of intranets and client/server computing have increased IT costs, but many organizations are unaware of how expensive computers, particularly notebooks, are to maintain. Central IT staffs often have no records of how many computers are floating around the company. PC suppliers have been developing standards such as DMI that let users pull identifying information from hardware and software and permit sophisticated inventory and remote software distribution.
