Strategic Planning and Small Business

Article Abstract:

Planning is an activity by management to insure the future, and to see that all resources are used to meet the objectives of the company. Planning and strategy have become increasingly important in the last twenty years as companies have shifted from concern for the short-term to the long-term. Small businesses are no exception. The owner-manager needs to prepare for the future as well. An important goal is setting the objectives in light of the company's mission. While it is important to plan, many managers do not do so, for a variety of reasons. In general, organizations should build on strengths. Charts, tables, and diagrams illustrate planning for small business.

Transferring Technology from Universities to Small Firms

Article Abstract:

Because of budget limitations, universities have had to look to the private sector for funding for research. Smaller firms are joining their larger counterparts in participating with universities to share resources. Small firms do not have the budgets to support large research and development or testing facilities; cooperation with universities provides an outlet. Further, companies can gain access to new products from universities through licensing agreements. To date (1984) in England the level of cooperation between small companies and universities has been limited. Charts summarize data on licensing agreements in England.
