Streaming media tools

Article Abstract:

The demand for streaming media is increasing as users demand original content. The technology offers ample opportunities for interactive products and new marketing, electronic commerce and video distribution concepts. Streaming video requires server software for transmitting the content and player software for viewing. The most popular server applications are Microsoft's Windows Media Technologies and RealNetworks' RealSystem G2. RealNetworks offers a free version of RealSystem G2 server. Media Technologies is also free and offers basic video encoding tools. Today's video publishing tools offer more options, including WYSIWYG and HTML-style interfaces. A buyers' guide lists the features of 10 streaming media tools and video editors.

NCompass Labs' Resolution Web manager is highly recommended for someone starting out with a small intranet. Installing and using the software is easy, and nontechnical users will appreciate the product's clearly written tutorials and intuitive interface. Resolution comes with templates, including ones for business requirements, such as sales or human resources. A drawback is Resolution's production server, which only accommodates 24 concurrent contributors. NCompass intends to remedy this in a forthcoming version.
