Opening Pandora's Box

Article Abstract:

Mixed views continue to be expressed about whether there is a need for statutory regulation in the UK tourism industry. It is clear that standards need to be improved in some areas, but there are number of possible ways of doing this. It may be possible to introduce statutory regulation with self-certification, for example, or approved local schemes monitored by a national board. There is particular concern about tourist attractions, where standards may fall as many new attractions are opened but visitor numbers do not increase, thus driving down re-investment levels.
