The Incredible World of CP-M

Article Abstract:

Operating systems are system software packages that define communication protocols between computers and peripherals. They also maintain disk file directories and define file structures. The Control Program for Microcomputers (CP-M) is a flexble multifunction system supporting 2,000 application programs and capable of being used on ninety percent of 8-Bit microcomputers. Digital Research Corp. has developed CP-M-86 for 16-Bit processors which can be made compatible with 8-Bit programs. CP-M commands are programmer, not user, oriented. Differences among vendors in formatting disks can cause problems in using some CP-M programs. Leading CP-M-compatible management programs and alternative operating systems are listed.
