The Optical Disk as an Information Storage Tool

Article Abstract:

Laser technology, used in data retrieval from optical disks, is considered to be the best solution to the problems of retrieval, access, and distribution of data. Three formats of optical storage that serve the diverse needs of various office environments are: optical videodisc, used extensively for training; optical digital data disk, used for mass archival storage; and compact disk with read-only memory (CD-ROM) suitable for automated office applications. Laser read-write technology will serve to make data available in the form of video, audio, text, images, or any combination of these. Photographs of optical disks and workstations are included, as well as a table showing optical storage use, and a document management system flowchart.

Verbatim Displays Erasable Optical Disk

Article Abstract:

Verbatim Corp., a major flexible disk manufacturer, previewed a protoype of an erasable optical disk at the National Computer Conference in Chicago. The product, which is predicted to be available in 1987, comes in a 3.5-inch format with 40 MB of storage. The disk employs the magneto-optic process; technology which involves both laser and vertical magnetic recording methods. Verbatim is also preparing the same technology for both 4.7-inch and 5.25-inch formats and expects to increase the storage capacity to 100 MB, single-sided.
