The kids behind the stereotype

Article Abstract:

Students in a fourth grade class in a poor San Francisco neighborhood had an opportunity to enjoy CD-ROM titles on the school's only 486 PC. Most of the students had no background at all with this type of software, but they all adapted easily and learned quickly. The students thoroughly enjoyed the CD-ROMs they were presented with, especially the Kids on Site title. The CD is mostly videos of construction equipment that the users can steer. Other titles included Me and My World, a children's encyclopedia that includes an animated guide who shows pictures of a classroom and animals. The user can click on an object, and have its name spoken and spelled out on-screen. The title includes puzzles, and is an excellent reading and vocabulary tool. The Discovering Endangered Wildlife title, besides attractive photos and clips, includes entertaining puzzles and information about endangered species.

Shakespeare's soaps

Article Abstract:

It is common in the UK for intellectuals to criticize popular art forms such as soap operas and films. However, those who criticize these art forms overlook the fact that the art forms they study, such as Shakespeare, essays and lyric poems, were just as popular at the time they were written as soap operas are today. Popularity is not a measure of artistic importance, but lasting popularity which then becomes respect is the most reliable indicator of artistic merit.

Negotiate don't retaliate

Article Abstract:

Trade disputes should be settled in the negotiating table as much as possible. Trade retaliation must be used as a weapon of last resort rather than as an instrument by which one can impose his own opinion of fair trade.
