Thin screens muscle into display market

Article Abstract:

The market for display screens is being expanded with the recent introduction of two technologies, plasma display panels and LCDs. The two types of monitors are being marketed as superior alternatives to standard CRT displays. Along with larger screens at a fraction of the width and weight, both plasma and LCD are superior to CRT in that they are more energy efficient, have perfect focus from all angles and display true color at high resolutions. Working models of plasma screens up to 40-in have been designed by all the significant CRT makers, such as Sony, Panasonic, NEC and Hitachi. Sampo, ViewSonic, and Tatung are releasing LCD displays as large as 15 inches. A new plasma technology, plasma-addressed liquid crystal (PALC), has spurred development of competing displays from Sony and Sharp. The PALC technology is supposed to offer superior color and brightness to plasma and LCD, but is more expensive to construct.
