Where Automation Is Taking Office Design

Article Abstract:

Automation is affecting the manner in which buildings are designed. In fact, space-planning firms often must plan buildings from the inside out. Access floors are installed to allow access to cables and wires. Wall partitions lend an added flexibility to office designs. Proper lighting to reduce glare and special acoustics to muffle noises can account for an increase in worker productivity. Buffer zones enable businesses to expand their office space to meet growing needs. In addition, simplified workstation components that avoid fancy, expensive details can reduce costs effectively. Most importantly, space-planning firms must anticipate the future needs of business organizations.

Other obstacles include resistance to acquisition by top management, lack of standards, and lack of cooperation between manufacturers, end-users and information managers. Productivity credited to office automation can be difficult to measure except through revenues and profitability.
