Article Abstract:

Netscape Communicator 4.0 and Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) 4.0 go beyond mere Web browsers to provide extended software suites that tightly integrate Internet functionality with basic desktop computing. The products are similar in many aspects and industry pundits are predicting the replacement of the graphical user interface with the browser. The Webtop will result in increased market share for Microsoft as the release of Windows 98 makes all new PCs Internet-ready. Netscape is countering by concentrating on the enterprise market, although the company seems to be losing ground in the consumer market. Microsoft's approach to capturing the browser market by bundling IE with Win 98 may seem a bit strong, but it is not really illegal. Competition between the two products will result in innovations that benefit users.

Getting down to e-business

Article Abstract:

The first commercial use of the Internet was as a marketing communications medium. Poorly designed and low-impact sites led to new forms of Web marketing, notably sponsorship programs and banner advertising. Then, MIS departments realized that the Internet, despite its technical shortcomings, offered an excellent opportunity to tie suppliers and customers into corporate systems. However, IS departments proved to be just as helpless as their marketing brethren when it came to creating content. In the third wave of commercial Internet exploitation, businesses create new systems for electronic commerce. Companies need to realize that content is king on the Internet and budget accordingly. Despite its checkered past, business on the Internet is now a mission-critical proposition.
