A chicken and the egg question

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Honorary Chairman Harold Crowther intends to introduce a system of mentors into the profession. Young arbitrators, who have passed their diplomas and assessments, will be coached by experienced mentors, to allow them to gain valuable experience of the work. For many years the arbitration system has been criticised by the building industry for the poor quality of arbitrators who are given extensive powers. Young arbitrators are often refused work because of their lack of experience which Crowther hopes to remedy by his placement scheme.

The magnificent Prescott

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's plans to make all builders join a trade association may be successful in abolishing cowboy builders. Builders who fail to belong to a recognized body will not be able to purchase building materials. The trade associations will have to ensure standards are maintained and provide a set of disciplinary rules. By making builders join associations will mean they will be obliged to charge their customers value added tax, which is passed on to the Treasury. It is estimated the government loses 1 billion pounds sterling in tax each year.

Handing over the reins

Article Abstract:

The Arbitration Act 1996 has been designed to provide the arbitrator with more power when administering the arbitration process in the United Kingdom. It is essential that the arbitrator, who is likely to be a professional such as an architect, engineer or quantity surveyor, remains fair and impartial at all times during the process. If the arbitrator strays from this it is highly likely that the new act of parliament will not work.
