A good deal better

Article Abstract:

The 1904 Kirkgate Market in Leeds, England is being refurbished by architect, Povall Worthington. The covered market had fallen into a dangerous state and required 200,000 pounds worth of emergency repairs before the eight million pounds refurbishment programme could begin. The structure, stalls and adjoining office and shop buildings have been restored to their 1904 appearance while modern services and fire safety facilities have been added. Trade continued throughout the works and the completed building will gain favour from architectural critics.

Shaded by angels wings

Article Abstract:

Gateway House, part of the campus of Leicester Polytechnic has been refurbished. The 1960s system built building needed insulation and shading from sunlight as well as internal improvements. The shading was accomplished by use of perforated aluminium panels set over individual windows at 45 degree angles. The system was researched in the Polytechnic's laboratories. The panels give the building a distinctive appearance, suited to its role as part of the new Simon de Montfort University's research centre.
