A vision of the future, rooted in the past

Article Abstract:

Improvement of Britain's infrastructure is necessary for economic survival in the 21st Century. However, progress towards major transport and urabn regeneration projects is being thwarted by the attitudes of architects, bureaucrats and public opinion. The anti-development lobby is led by bodies such as the Department of National Heritage, the Arts Council and English Heritage. It places more importance on the celebration of heritage than the improvement of Britain's infrastructure.

The steel age

Article Abstract:

The state of steel architecture and construction follows no clear pattern and reveals that the architectural profession is uncertain about the use of steel in the construction industry. The use of steel in construction started in civil work during the latter half of the 19th century and transferred to buildings by 1900. It's main advantages over concrete for use as a building material are weight and cost. The history of steel constructions is presented in greater detail.

Champagne socialists get sidetracked in the foyer

Article Abstract:

Birmingham city council in the UK is funding a 2.5 million pounds sterling building to house 100 of its homeless people. The design won an award at the Architecture Foundation in 1993 and emulates the foyer style commenced in France. The foyer design uses curtain walling and glass and believes that the creation of an active environment can help people with social difficulties. Many foyer-type buildings in France have not survived as they have been unsuccessful.
