Aggregates could become a political minefield

Article Abstract:

The draft copy of the UK Department of the Environment's (DOE) 'Mineral Planning Guidance Note 6,' proposes the reduction of land-claimed aggregates from 250 million to 240 million tonnes by 2011 and maintenance of marine-claimed aggregates at 21 million tonnes. Recycled materials will be increased from 32 to 78 million tonnes. The proposals are opposed by the British Aggregate Construction Materials Industries. Critics claim that recycled aggregates consume more energy in industrial reprocessing and transport. Increased imports will result in the creation of up to 20 coastal quarries.
