AmEx may close catalog division

Article Abstract:

New York, NY-based, charge card and credit card marketer American Express Co (AmEx) has confirmed its plan to discontinue a catalog service produced and managed by its Merchant Services Group or outsource it to a direct mail catalog business by Dec 31, 1999. AmEx spokeswoman Gail Wasserman said the firm is already in discussions with a number of direct mail catalog firms. Insiders estimate the AmEx catalog business to be worth between $40 million-$50 million.

U.S.-EU Privacy Pact Needs More Work

Article Abstract:

A European Union (EU) privacy directive threatens EU-US relations even as negotiators from both sides have made some progress towards a pact. The new directive disallows the transmission of personal data about European citizens to any country with inadequate privacy protection regulations, including the US. Negotiators are hoping to forge a final document by the end of Apr 1999 to coincide with the biennial summit meeting between the US and EU.
