Architecture Commission set to replace RFAC

Article Abstract:

It is expected that the UK Dept for Culture, Media and Sport will shortly announce plans for an independent Architecture Commission with regional offices. This new organization, which it is believed will be linked closely with the Arts Council and the Crafts Council, will replace the Royal Fine Art Commission. The regional offices would act as a forum for discussion, presentation and information, and would allow the Dept for the Environment, Transport and the Regions to directly influence planning and transport issues.

City NIMBYs block Calatrava tower

Article Abstract:

Wates City has withdrawn a planning application for a 136 mt high tower designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava following objections from residents of the Barbican development in London, England. Opponents of the tower have been particularly concerned about its top, which extends laterally in a curved spire at the south end, increasing its width by one-third. They fear that this would reduce the amount of light coming into rooms situated on the east face of Willoughby House.
