Over and out

Article Abstract:

The winding down of the London Docklands Development Corp (LDDC), which will be completed on Apr 1, 1998, has been underway since Apr 1992. Relations with local authorities have been generally positive, and this has made the de-designation process easier. The first area to be de-designated and given to a local authority was an area of Bermondsey, London, England. This came into the possession of Southwark local authority in Oct 1994. Ownership of the Isle of Dogs' docks has been transferred smoothly to the British Waterways Board.

How the east was won

Article Abstract:

The London Docklands Development Corp (LDDC), created in mid-1981, had to take on the responsibility for developing a 12 km stretch of land between London Bridge and the Royal Docks in Beckton, London, England. It faced considerable challenges, and its work was not always appreciated by local residents. However, its relations with local authorities gradually improved, and it began to see considerable success in creating new homes and jobs. It was possible to construct more than 24,300 new homes between 1981 and Mar 1997.
