Gentle giant

Article Abstract:

The British Library, London, England, will open in Nov 1997 after 21 years of planning and construction. The 511 million pounds sterling national library, designed by Colin St John Wilson, is Britain's biggest and most costly public building. The building's exterior is not impressive, but the interior is beautifully crafted in materials including brick, marble and leather, and the spatial planning is excellent. The entrance hall is monumental yet accessible, books are housed underground and the range of above-ground reading spaces all receive large amounts of natural light.
