A cautionary tale

Article Abstract:

Ceramica, an interactive visitor centre about the local pottery industry in Burslem, England, ran out of money before it could be completed. The scheme, which had a budget of 4.4 million pounds sterling, was the only landmark millennium project in Staffordshire, England. The Ceramica Trust is now seeking additional funding, estimated at up to 800,000 pounds sterling, and it seems unlikely that the scheme will open before 2001 at the earliest. Ceramica Trust Director Roger Edwards believes that the scheme was underfunded from the outset, while others claim that problems arose as a result of unanticipated additional costs, which the ad hoc trust had no reserves to meet.

Article Abstract:

The 26 million pounds sterling Science Centre under construction on the riverfront in Glasgow, Scotland, is the first building in the UK to feature titanium cladding. This building, designed by Building Design Partnership, will be clad with 6,000 sq mt of 99% pure titanium sheet. Titanium is more expensive than stainless steel, but offers a good design life and visual appearance. The titanium for the Science Centre will be produced to a special architectural specification by Architectural Titanium of Kansas, TX.

Article Abstract:

Ashford station in Kent has been rebuilt and is one of the first major public buildings to have been procured via the private finance initiative (PFI). It was designed by Nick Derbyshire Design Associates and is an oblong shape with semi-cylindircal ends. Materials include clear glazing, glass blocks, blue-painted structural steelwork and white power-coated aluminium cladding.
