The good the bland and the ugly

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom has seen a lot of good and bad architectural design onnew building work, although many old buildings have become derelict because of lack of Government interest or committment. Many hospitals, libraries, mental asylums and other public-sector buildings which have great architectural character, could, and should have been converted for modern use. Architects have been very successful in building conversions, for example the Techniquest science experience center in Cardiff.

Pride of place

Article Abstract:

Some of Manchester's urban regeneration has been disastrous over the past decade, but new infill projects and refurbishments are more sympathetic to the city's quality architecture. New projects include the Central Manchester Development Corporation's plans for an urban heritage park in Castlefield, and an office development in Quay Street which incorporates both the Edwardian Baroque and Victorian Renaissance styles of neighbouring buildings.

Past improvements

Article Abstract:

The current trend of refurbishing old buildings may have reached its peak, but we should take stock of our approach to building conservation as we approach the new century. The one approach to conservation that must be discarded is the urge to preserve for its own sake. Buildings should only be restored if the adaptation is sensitive, otherwise a replacement structure should be considered.
