Article Abstract:

Many UK construction companies are now seeking non-executive directors with widespread business experience as they seek to implement the recommendations of the Cadbury report, especially in the area of corporate governance. The report calls for a more independent role for non-executive directors, and recommends that a company board should contain at least three non-executive directors. There is particular demand for City bankers and people with business development experience.

Article Abstract:

The DTI now agrees with Reading University's opinions that construction management is better than management contracting. This follows the refurbishment of two government buildings, one employing a construction manager and finishing 30% below budget and ahead of schedue, and the other employing a management contractor, overrunning on both counts. Construction managers act as client consultants while management contractors undertake employment of subcontractors.
