Starting over

Article Abstract:

David Hindle is managing director of Amey Building. Amey began trading in 1991 when its parent company brought Hindle's former company, Tern Construction from the receivers. Hindle was chief executive and chmn of Tern for three years and turned it round from near insolvency but the problems of its parent company and the hard line atttitude of its bankers caused the receivers to be called in. Once employed by Amey, Hindle had to unite the staff of his own and another similar company to form the new organisation. He has won some new contracts and is optimistic about the future.

Why the merger mania?

Article Abstract:

Mowlem Chief Executive John Gains believes that it is important to focus on improving the quality of earnings and bottom line of the group's construction operations. He is also seeking to expand the group's facilities management and environmental businesses. He feels that Mowlem can no longer afford to be involved in flagship projects unless they are profitable, and that there is a need to ensure that the group only works on projects in which its contribution is fully valued. He places strong emphasis on the issue of handling risk.
