Construction dazed by fashion victims

Article Abstract:

Procurement methods should be chosen for their appropriateness for the type of project and the skills of the people involved. The current fashion for management contracting does not necessarity mean this form of procurement will always produce good results. Two management contractor projects reported in Mar 1992 and endorsed by the Department of Trade and Industry were successful because of the experience of the clients and construction managers involved, the form of procurement itself did not bring about success.

Four frontal attack

Article Abstract:

Legal experts say that the Scheme for Construction Contracts has made the adjudication process for all contract parties much too complicated. The proposals were developed to supplement the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Bill in an attempt to stop people taking advantage of loopholes in the law. If the scheme is agreed the entire process will be more difficult to use and understand, and will inevitably lengthen the arbitration process. Financial payments are also ill-defined.

The UK Highway Agency's Design, build, finance, operate (DBFO) road building projects have progressed to the second stage of development: tranche two. The construction industry is advised to note differences in contractual arrangements resulting in greater risk to the contractor. The risks associated with contract structure tests are discussed. DBFO road building projects in tranche two are larger than those in tranche one.
