Bertelsmann financing media growth through AOL stock sale

Article Abstract:

Bertelsmann AG, a Germany-based media giant, is selling America Online Inc (AOL) stock to fund new ventures in the electronic media world. According to German business daily, Handelsblatt, Bertelsmann profited DM2.2 billion ($1.2 billion) from stock sales over the last 18 months. Bertelsmann, which acquired 5% of outstanding AOL shares in 1995 for $50 million, will re-launch AOL Europe, an AOL-Bertelsmann joint venture not involved in the stock sale, through its 'Operation Jump' effort.

La Redoute enters US market under Brylane Umbrella and with a french accent

Article Abstract:

French mail-order house La Redoute has entered the US catalog market, sending the first of its two test mailings to a list of 800,000. The second mailing will be sent to 800,000 names in May 1999. Half of the test names came from the in-house list of Brylane, which was acquired by La Redoute in 1998 to serve as platform for its US expansion. The 68-page specialty apparel catalog targets regular-size women with a median age of between 32 and 33.

Toys International files for Chapter 11

Article Abstract:

Toys International has filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11. The filing was aimed at executing an orderly winddown of its business and sale of its assets. It operated Web sites in the US and Europe as well as 38 US stores. In a statement reported Mar 30, 2001, the company announced that it is continuing to hold discussions with potential investors that may be interested in financing the company following the bankruptcy filing.
