Big cellar

Article Abstract:

A basement has been included in a house in a small development built by Laing Homes in Hertfordshire, UK. The basement covers an area of 1000 square feet and it is the first time Laing have included such an addition to one of its properties. High costs of basement inclusions have deterred many UK housebuilders from building them, although the ones who have, such as Friel Homes, claim extra value is added on to the price of the house. Basement walls must be strengthened with reinforced concrete and a good water drainage system installed.

Against the grain

Article Abstract:

UK housebuilders can choose from a range of different materials when selecting windows and doors. PVCu has become a very popular material among consumers, but some housebuilders prefer to use timber windows and doors to give a more high quality image. Using timber can also boost the value of new and secondhand homes. Countryside Properties, for example, uses door sets from Swedor. For windows, a trend is emerging to construct windows out of timber but to place some other material on the outer face to reduce the impact of weathering.

Egan on a double shift

Article Abstract:

Steel building manufacturer Yorkon is manufacturing 74 container-sized modules which will be stacked five deep to make 30 apartments for housing association Peabody Trust on a brownfield site in Hackney, London, England. The modules are a monocoque construction, with the external surface areas being stressed, self-supporting panels. Project architect Cartwright Pickard emphasizes that the design exceeds both thermal and acoustic requirements for housing.
