Breaking the mould

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Abbey Hanson Rowe took an innovative approach when designing an office block in Leeds, England, for developer Norwich Union Investment Managers. The building is designed as a curving tower, with the base being shiny black granite and the rest creamy white precast concrete panels. This goes against the focus on using brick in the city centre over recent years. It has 12 storeys, producing a net floor area of 10,400 sq mt. Design features include an atrium covered by three parasol-like tensile fabric structures.

Three of the best

Article Abstract:

Three historic buildings in Cheshire, Glasgow and Suffolk have all been converted in a sympathetic modern style. A Victorian cottage in Cheshire has been radically restored by David Brindley Architects by focusing on external forms and internal spaces. Meanwhile, a 5 million pounds sterling refurbishment of Glasgow's Tron Theatre has been accomplished by RMJM Scotland and the centrepiece of a 4.5 million pounds sterling restoration of Snape Maltings Concert is a 100-seat restaurant on a mezzanine floor.
