Reinventing the wheel

Article Abstract:

The capsules designed by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield for the Millennium Wheel in London, England, had to fulfill a number of conditions. They had to be fully enclosed, suitable for sitting in and walking around and capable of allowing passengers to enter and leave them while the wheel revolves. Marks and Barfield have produced 32 capsules able to carry 25 passengers at a time. The capsules have a steel skeleton, with the glazed passenger compartment being surrounded by two ring beams linked to the wheel with triangular support brackets welded to the outside face of the wheel's rim. There are two air-conditioning units hidden beneath the capsule floor.

Out with the old, in with the new

Article Abstract:

Procession House, City of London, England, combines modern and traditional cladding. The building has a 22 million pounds sterling cladding system which incorporates an internal glazed curtain walling system whilst externally it is clad in bricks. The compromise over the cladding was to fit the needs of planners who wanted traditional cladding. Whereas Heron Property Corporation wanted to use modern materials. The office building was initially designed by Edward Cullinan Architects but the developers choose architects RHWL to take over the work once planning permission had been agreed.
