Breeze blocks

Article Abstract:

Architects Michael Hopkins and structural engineers Ove Arup have won first prize in the BREEAM environmental assessment competition for its design of the Inland Revenue offices at Nottingham, UK. The building has no air conditioning and uses natural light and triple glazing to conserve energy. Heating is supplied through the local power station which burns domestic refuse. The power station emits carbon dioxide which is greener than methane gas which rotting rubbish emits. The design utilises Middle Eastern architecture. Chimneys suck warm air out and draw cooler air in.

The meccano set

Article Abstract:

Steel is increasingly replacing concrete as a form of refurbishment. Steel is more flexible than concrete and is easier and cheaper to use, as the steel frames can be made off-site and bolted together quickly on-site. Lightweight steel permits additional flooring to be bolted on top of an existing building. Portable welding equipment and drilling equipment which can be clamped onto frames make it easier to cut and change frames. Improvements in galvanising finishes, add-on steel sections and the relaxation in fire regulations makes steel competitive.
