Building Regs and Brussels enmeshed

Article Abstract:

Builders can apply for a Local Authority Habitation Certificate under the 1991 Building Regulations. This certifies that the building complies with the Regulations but is of dubious worth to builders. The European Community Workplace Directive will come into force on Jan 1 1993. It affects the structure, layout and facilities in workplaces. However, there may be conflict with the UK Building Regulations and information is not forthcoming.

Only 48 hours in a week

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government has been unable to prevent the enforcement of the European Union's directive concerning a 48-hour maximum working week. The directive also specifies the provision of holidays and designated rest periods, although some occupations are excluded. Employers should review their workers' contracts in order to avoid possible contravention of the directive when it is implemented.
