Building for fun

Article Abstract:

A meeting was held for the construction industry on how they could win building projects for the UK leisure industry. Speakers pointed out they needed to be able to communicate with managers on site. They felt it was very important the managers were experienced and understood health and safety rules. Spending on construction for the leisure industry is likely to rise by 10% in 1999-2000 from 2.4 billion pounds sterling in 1998. Most speakers reiterated the importance of contracters keeping to time and cost budgets. The meeting was held by 'Building' and IBM during Nov 1999.

Graduate by degrees

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for further education institutions in the UK to offer part-time courses tailored to the needs of those who are already working long hours. Within the construction industry, it is now possible to gain additional qualifications through distance learning, evening-only courses and the Internet. Gaining additional qualifications can be demanding, but will bring long-term benefits in the form of more rapid career progression and a higher income.
