Casting abroad

Article Abstract:

UK structural steel manufacturers are suffering from the recession and many are operating at a loss. Automation and computer aided design means that cost cutting can only be achieved through job cuts. The British Constructional Steelwork Association has published a draft code of practice to establish quicker forms of payment. It has also commissioned with the Department of Trade and Industry a report on export opportunites in Europe. Many firms are looking overseas, such as Robert Watson who has won a 13 million pound sterling contract to supply and erect a steel structure for Kansai Airport, Japan.

Brief encounters

Article Abstract:

All building projects depend on the quality of the client's brief but in the case of design and build operations, there is debate about how extensive the brief should be. Most contractors which offer design and build services believe that the brief shoud merely set out the client's basic requirements for space and performance, enabling the contractor to design the most cost effective building. However, consultants argue for more detailed specifications in order to ensure quality of materials and workmanship.
