Cladding's laser-bright future under a cloud

Article Abstract:

An architectural conference organised by the TUV in Cologne, Germany in Oct 1992 showed that future building design is focusing on solar technology and is against air conditioning. UK architects favour buildings which offer natural ventilation and cooling systems provided by lukewarm water being pumped through floor slabs. German architects favour prisms and holograms which send sheets of redirected sunlight across building space. However many holographic effects are neutralised by clouds.

Building Sights becomes a sight for sore eyes

Article Abstract:

There have been few good UK television programmes on architecture. BBC2's Building Sights has improved since Autumn 1992. The programme runs for 10 minutes and is usually spoilt by the presenter knowing little or nothing about architecture. The use of European celebrities as presenters has upgraded the programme. In particular Daniel Libeskind's presentation of the Potzdammer Platz in Berlin which has been a vacant urban space since 1945 was excellent.

An attack of royal loyalties that soon passed

Article Abstract:

The right of Charles, Prince of Wales to open a new school of architecture is open to criticism. The Prince's speech at the launch of his Institute of Architecture was a shallow mix of New Age expressions that does not hold up under scrutiny. The Prince should not meddle in architectural education and would have been better employed by endowing a scholarship or chair at one of the 36 existing recognized schools of architecture.
