Article Abstract:

The advances in electronic data exchange technology could have potential advantages for the UK construction industry as it seeks to reduce costs in line with recommendations made in Sir Michael Latham's report. The use of information technology could help streamline the production process and reduce man hours. However, increased use of electronic information will bring problems of copyright and data security. A selection of industry trend-spotters give their views on how the construction industry can make use of the new technology.

Fantasy self-build

Article Abstract:

Architect Ken Shuttleworth has been able to call on leading figures in the UK construction industry to design a new family home in Wiltshire, England. The 345,000 pounds sterling home, which is due to be completed by Christmas 1997, is based on two single-storey crescents. The outer crescent contains the bedrooms, while the inner crescent contains a large open-plan living area. Labourers on the scheme have been very interested in working on such an unusual design.

Coming up roses

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry generally believes that the likely election of a Labour government in the near future will not have a negative impact on its activities. Most construction experts feel that there will be little change under a Labour government, and some believe that there may even be some improvement. There is a feeling that a new government with fresh ideas and initiatives should be welcomed.
