Construction's second chance

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry is expected to use the 1999 National Construction Week event as a public relations exercise to rebuild its image with both clients and the public. The industry has been hit by a series of late finishings, low customer satisfaction and inquiries into high prices. The National Construction Week event will be used to highlight improvements made in the industry, while making a career in construction seem more appealing to the next generation of employees. Special events have been set up especially with children in mind.

Tower of strength

Article Abstract:

The use of injected polyurethane foam has helped tenants in high rise blocks of flats in Liverpool to cut energy costs by up to 25%, while ensuring buildings remain stable. The 20 million pounds sterling injection project was carried out by the Liverpool Housing Action Trust in 1996 after it was discovered brick cladding on 41 housing blocks was in danger of collapse due to a lack of wall ties. Wall gaps are sealed by the injected polyurethane foam, helping to insulate flats and secure wall movement.
