DIY tinkering is Russian roulette

Article Abstract:

The May 1992 printing of the Joint Contracts Tribunal Intermediate Form of Building Contract 1984 Edition incorporates Amendments 1: 1986 to 6: 1991. It corrects several small errors which appeared in previous printings but some mistakes and ambiguities remain. Mistakes can be corrected by individuals when the form is used but a better approach would be for more time to be spent identifying such errors and correcting them for the benefit of all. It is essential to use the most up-to-date and corrected version of all standard forms.

Contractual pain of contractor's design

Article Abstract:

The use of the Contractor's Designed Portion Supplement (CDPS.991) with the JCT Standard Form of Building Contract (JCT80) raises problems. Combining the two documents means reconciling different responsibilities for control, carrying out and valuation of work. The two documents are not compatible in organisation or layout and, although they can be used together, may cause unexpected complications. The JCT80 should be combined with the CDPS into one, revised document.

Construction chaos theory eludes DOE

Article Abstract:

The UK Department of the Environment's investigation into the adversarial nature of the construction industry will cost 250,000 pounds sterling. Much litigation could be avoided if the correct contract was negotiated and agreed upon before construction work commenced. Modifications to standard contracts need a warranty covering ambiguities. Powers should be given to the administrator.
