DM agencies dodge brunt of industrywide layoffs

Article Abstract:

Advertising, interactive and public relations agencies in May 2001 eliminated many executive positions, but direct marketing firms were largely spared. Among the firms were Agency.com, which laid off 350 employees, and McCann-Erickson Worldwide Advertising in New York, NY. At direct marketing agencies, Chicago, IL-based Frankel dismissed 30 executives after eliminating 45 in February, and Brann Worldwide laid off 60 executives at its office in Richmond, VA. Public relations agency Cone Inc said it will close its office in New York on Jun 29.

Protocol buys Dickinson Direct

Protocol Communications Inc, based in Danvers, MA, has acquired Dickinson Advertising, a direct marketing company headquartered in Braintree, MA. Dickinson provides services from marketing strategy and creative development to list acquisition and research, data processing, printing and mailing. Privately-owned Protocol offers services that include pre- sales customer support, customer sales, market planning, fulfillment and data mining. Under the new management, Dickinson Pres and CEO Reed Dickinson will continue to oversee the firm.

Gillespie reorganizes divisions

Article Abstract:

Gillespie has formed a separate division, referred to as the client business development group, to strengthen its interactive services. Based in Princeton, NJ, Gillespie is a 27-year-old full-service shop, which is now part of the Interpublic Group of Cos Inc. Recently, the agency began using streaming video, HTML, e-mails and interactive CD-ROMs. In year 2000, Gillespie posted billings of over $210 million.
