Article Abstract:

The future of the manufactured housing industry is influenced by two overriding images. The first perception is that of people who live in manufactured homes is that of haggard adults and dirty children. Another image is that manufactured housing is the aftermath of tornadic activity. Although the image problems vary from place to place, they represent a significant threat to growth and prosperity.

The number of manufactured housing starts in April 2000 fell by 4.5% on the previous month's total. The effects of interest rate rises and falling consumer confidence on the housing market are discussed.
