Direct action

Article Abstract:

The construction industry has signalled a move away from using the self-employed, in favour of direct labour. The move is the result of planned changes in self-employed tax laws and improved training. Kyle Stewart and Tarmac are among the construction companies currently investigating the benefits of direct labour. In 1993, 59% of labourers were self-employed, compared to 31% in 1975.
