Discovering Columbus

Article Abstract:

Architects Ove Arup Partnership have decided to allow other firms to use their in-house document management system for free. They plan to recoup the development funding, of 120,000 pounds per annum, by offering a help line service for users and by not having to pay for other systems, if it is used by several firms in the industry. The system, known as Columbus, can be used with many different types of software. It was developed when the company failed to find a suitable system on the market. They were also reluctant to pay costs of around 2 million pounds sterling for licenses.

Take off time

Article Abstract:

BAA Lynton, the commercial property division of BAA, was able to make considerable time and cost savings during the construction of Endeavour House at Stansted Airport, England, by using an innovative framing system that allows cladding to begin when the frame is only half-completed. A post-tensioned hybrid framing system was created by frame contractor O'Rourke. Placing strong emphasis on simplicity also ensured that construction time and costs were kept to a minimum.
