Slim possibilities

Article Abstract:

The architectural design of buildings could be altered for ever with the introduction of a light-weight but strong vacuum glazing system from Japan. The super-slim double glazed units can be less then 8 millimeters thick, making them ideal for use in building design while still providing protection against severe heat and cold. The main difficulty for the design team was to vacuum seal two pieces of glass together without the sheets breaking due to the internal pressure. The insertion of a metal supporting pillar enabled the manufactures to overcome this problem.

Cladding: the new rules

Article Abstract:

Improved performance and tougher testing methods are to be introduced for building cladding in the UK, after the death of a pensioner in a tower block fire. Cladding on all council owned buildings will require examination to ensure new standards are met and fire safety regulations are adhered to. The UK government is leading the way in ensuring higher safety for cladding.
