Do the public really have a say?

Article Abstract:

Some architects are using members of the community to help with the design process. Others set up workshops for people from a community who communicate with the rest of the residents via interviews and questionnaires. Some observers suggest using public meetings to provide an arena for public consultation on building projects can be worthwhile as long as the meetings are not dominated by various interest groups. Whereas using exhibitions to explain forthcoming projects have a limited value as the public may not understand the exhibits and only very few actually attend the exhibitions.

'Why waste half your life working in all that noise and dust? It's just not worth it.'

Article Abstract:

A group of British 14-15 years olds gave their opinions on the construction industry. Many of the children had taken part in The Construction Challenge initiative. They put forward several reasons why they were not interested in construction work, such as insecurity of the work, the dirty environment and the hard physical labour needed in construction. Their idea of a typical construction worker was not a good role model. They also had incorrect information concerning the training and wages of contractors and architects.
