Double Scotch

Article Abstract:

Scotland has two Window Advice Centres, where architects and quantity and building surveyors give advice on the most appropriate replacement windows for commercial projects. In Scotland, replacement windows must not only meet the conditions set by local authority planning departments, as they must in the UK, but must also be suitable for the region's harsh weather conditions. Window manufacturers must supply products which are appropriate for the particular style of building and which offer energy saving features.

Cover price

Article Abstract:

The Catrus Space Truss System, designed by Ahmed El-Sheikh of Dundee University, is claimed to be an inexpensive way to overcome the problems traditionally associated with high cost structural systems. It brings together rectangular, hollow-section top chords, tubular diagonal sections and flat stip bottom members, and requires no special nodes or member end fittings. It is believed to be 6.5% cheaper and 27.7% lighter than ordinary frame systems. It is to be used in 1996 at two paper warehouses in Wales.

The gap closes: a 30% fall in prices in the past three years has brought PVCu window prices within sight of traditional timber. (Building Homes)

Article Abstract:

More housebuilders are installing PVCu windows in their homes as housebuyers become more discerning about products that are low-maintenance. Costs for PVCu windows have fallen 30% during the past three years and are expected to fall further. However they remain more expensive than timber windows.
